Why Does Abuse Happen?

The abused often feel as if they have no resources, no where to go, and no one who will listen. Sometimes, the abused don't even realize they are being abused until it is too late.

How Do I Know if Abuse is Occurring?

Violence is not the only form of domestic abuse, some examples are:

  • Threats of physical violence
  • Stripping one of their self-esteem
  • Withholding finances or food
  • Restricting access to family and friends

Often, the abused person is convinced that the perpetrator "just lost control". Some believe that the abuse would never escalate to physical abuse or death. Sadly, it does escalate. Have a plan of action to get out. Save your own life and possibly the lives of your children. You will find strength in family, friends, advocates, and even yourself.
